A postdoctoral Research Associate position is available for 9 months to cover maternity leave, for the period April to December 2011 in Professor Miguel Seabra's laboratory in the National Heart and Lung Institute, Faculty of Medicine.

The main objective of this project is to identify molecular mechanisms that regulate the degradation of phagocytosed rod outer segments by retinal pigment epithelial cells. The project uses a variety of imaging, cell biology, molecular biology, siRNA and biochemical techniques.

You will hold a PhD in a relevant subject, or have equivalent research, industrial or commercial experience, and will be a highly motivated scientist with interests in membrane traffic and disease. Experience in confocal microscopy of organelles and molecular biology is highly desirable.

This post is full-time and fixed-term for 9 months, and is based at South Kensington Campus.

The transport sector continues to need people with the right skills and training. Students progress from ITS to a range of professional-level jobs including those in consultancy, government, operators, non-for-profit and international agencies. ITS facilitates this via our close links with employer organisations

Accreditation

The programme is recognised by the leading professional bodies. It fulfils the educational requirements for membership of the Chartered Institute for Logistics and Transport (CILT UK) and the Institution of Highways and Transportation (IHT). It also provides a pathway towards the Transport Planning Professional (TPP) qualification.

Duration

The programme is available for full-time study (12 months) or for part-time study (flexible attendance but typically 2-3 years duration). Shorter Postgraduate Diploma and Certificate programmes are also available.

Eligibility

Applicants should have a good honours degree in economics (single or joint honours) or in a related discipline with significant economics content. International students are encouraged to apply, subject to competence in English language (IETLS 6.5 or equivalent).

ITS can advise on funding opportunities, including the process by which candidates can be nominated by ITS for scholarship competitions. Hydropower is the largest source of renewable energy in the world and account for about 20% of the electricity production worldwide. It is facing new technical challenges with the introduction of renewable energy resources, refurbishment of aging machines, adapt to climate changes and meet new regulations.

To deal with these challenges the Swedish power industry together with the authorities and universities started the Swedish Hydropower Centre (SVC). SVC is a competence centre for education and research within the field of hydropower, whose vision is to secure a knowledge and competence supply for Sweden, for an efficient and reliable hydropower production. Luleå University of Technology is an active member of the centre.

Lulea University of Technology (LTU) offers an open position for a PhD candidate in the field of fluid mechanics in an exiting and growing environment using the latest techniques at the Division of Fluid Mechanics being part of the Department of Applied Physics and Mechanical Engineering. The department is a world leading institution within hydropower research in the fields of fluid mechanics, rotor-dynamics and tribology. It has access to world unique facilities such as generic models, full-scale hydropower machines and corresponding models, computer cluster and advanced measuring techniques.

Project description

The project is essentially experimental and related to pressure measurement technique.

The project aims firstly to investigate rotor-stator interaction in axial machines of Kaplan type. Detailed unsteady pressure measurements will be performed on a Kaplan model at Vattenfall Research and Development, Älvkarleby, Sweden. Fluid conditions at and outside the energy efficient operation point are of interest.

The second part of the project aims to develop flow measurements technique for low head machines. Pressure time or/and hybrid ultrasound/Winter-Kennedy method(s) may be used. Experiments will be supported by numerical investigations.

The project implies close collaboration with Chalmers, Andritz and Vattenfall in Sweden but also the Norwegian University of Science and Technology, Norway and University of Tehran, Iran.

Qualifications

Applicants should have an MSc/civ.ing degree within mechanical engineering or applied physics or equivalent. Previous experience in computational and/or experimental fluid mechanics is a merit.

Since male students are traditionally more numerous in this field of studies, female candidates are especially encouraged to apply. The position requires skills in written and spoken English but knowledge about French and/or Swedish is a merit, since our industrial and academic partners are from France, Switzerland, Canada, Sweden, and Norway.

Eligibility and selection criteria

To achieve this, the following criteria and requirements apply to the students supported by the programme.

The focus of the scholarship cooperation is on poverty alleviation. Thus, in addition to the normal academic qualifications required for AIT (cumulative grade point average of not less than 2.75) applicants must have work experience in and demonstrate commitment to work on poverty alleviation to be eligible for the support. The applicants need to provide a written account of their background and their intentions after graduation with respect to work in poverty alleviation. Successful applicants are also expected to participate in follow up activities after graduation.

The specific requirements vary from country to country, as the target pool of candidates in each country is determined by the specific needs and requirements of the country.

Primary target group for this scholarship programme in Myanmar are employees of local or international community-based organization or civil society organization, including NGOs and faith-based organizations with at least three years of professional experience in poverty alleviation work. Local government employees engaged in poverty alleviation programmes may also apply for this scholarship.

Applicants need to have a level of English competency that allows them, with appropriate training and support of not more than one year, to achieve IELTS score of 4.5 to be eligible for studies in AIT

Thank you for your interest in the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology (KAUST). We suggest you carefully review the list of requirements and prepare your application in advance of the deadline.
You should complete your bachelor/master’s degree in a KAUST-relevant field of study prior to the semester of enrollment.
Current field of study must be in a KAUST-relevant area, such as Engineering, Mathematics, or the Physical, Chemical and Biological Sciences.
There is no minimum GPA requirement for admission. However, most candidates will have an average cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher on a 4.0 scale or equivalent in other international grading systems. The average GPA of admitted students is currently 3.7 on a 4.0 scale.
KAUST requires a minimum TOEFL score of 79 on the IBT (Internet Based Test) or 6.0 on the IELTS (International English Language Testing System) before an application will be considered for admission. KAUST's university code for the TOEFL exam is 4107. Only official TOEFL or IELTS scores will be accepted. TOEFL or IELTS scores for tests administered by an educational institution for admission to that particular institution are not acceptable.
A TOEFL or IELTS score is not required if the applicant is a native speaker of English (English is the primary language spoken in the home) or received a degree from a university in the United States, Canada, United Kingdom, Ireland, Australia, or New Zealand.
KAUST does not require the GRE exam for admission. However, we encourage students to take the GRE general test. A high quantitative score on the GRE will enhance a student’s application. The EMMEP (Erasmus Mundus Minerals and Environmental Programme) is a 2 year M.Sc. program for students in Mining / Geotechnical Engineering, Mineral Processing, Recycling and related academic studies.

Partner universities

The existing MSc programmes that are taught at the six universities form the basis of this two-year master course. The diversity, as well as the complimentary nature of these existing programmes will ensure that students can specialise themselves in different subjects related to the field of Resource Engineering. None of the individual universities alone can offer the subject paths this joint master offers, which is what makes the EMMEP Master a unique one.

The EMMEP consortium consists of six partner universities:

All of these universities are internationally oriented and provide excellent student services regarding things such as housing, welfare, language courses and social integration. Tuition fees & scholarships

The European Commission provides a limited number of scholarships for “third-country” graduates. Nationals and residents of EU Member States, EEA-EFTA States (Iceland, Liechtenstein and Norway) and candidate countries (Croatia, Former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia and Turkey) are not eligible for these grants. Eligible students need to have a degree from an institute of higher education and should not have engaged in their main activity (studies, work etc.) for more than 12 months over the last five years in any of the Member States or other participating countries mentioned above.

For third-country (outside European Economic Area) students:

The scholarships amount to 24,000 Euro for each of the two years of the programme. A fee of 10 000 EURO per year will be charged to cover the tuition fee and general administrative costs associated with the EMMEP programme. The remaining 14,000 Euros is available to the student to cover most of the cost of living and travelling.

For European (within European Economic Area) students:

The scholarships amout to 10,000 Euro for each of the two years of the programme. A fee of 4000 EURO per year for will be charged to cover the tuition fee, and general administrative costs associated with the EMMEP programme. The remaining 6,000 Euros is available to the student to cover most of the cost of living and travelling.

Admission requirements

-You must have a good Bachelor’s degree in mining, or minerals engineering, or an equivalent graduate degree in a subject relevant to the EMMEP Programme. You have a thorough general knowledge on the fundamentals in engineering or geo-sciences and your degree represents a minimum of 180 ECTS.

-In case the Bachelor’s degree has not been completed at the time of application, you should include a letter from your university stating that the degree will be completed before the 1 July.

-You are required to have a Grade Point Average (GPA) of at least 75 % of the scale maximum.

-If you do not originate from the countries United Kingdom, United States, Australia, New Zealand, Ireland or the English speaking part of Canada , you are required to demonstrate your proficiency in English. This will be done by submitting the results of a recognized language proficiency test, such as the TOEFL, IELTS or an equivalent. The English requirements are IELTS 6.5 or TOEFL internet based 90. Please note that regarding the TOEFL test, we only accept the internet based tests.

- A limited number of students with a few years of work experience, who will benefit from the course, will be considered to participate in the EMMEP programme. It is our opinion that such students can give the programme an added practical value.
Upon receipt of the applications, the Consortium Board will select a list of suitable candidates. The selection of students is based on the above criteria, which have been set and agreed on by the partner universities.

- Students who want to apply for the Erasmus Mundus scholarship should be aware that they are not allowed to apply for more than three Erasmus Mundus programmes.
A list of third country students to be recommended for scholarships will be compiled together with a reserve list. The recommendations will be submitted to the European Commission for confirmation.

We use a large variety of tools from the disciplines of cell biology, genetics and biochemistry, as well as the gene targeting capabilities of moss, to study the mechanisms of Exo70 and exocyst functions in a moss type of early land plants.

Visiting Fellowships 2011-2012

Each year the College offers a number of Visiting Fellowships to people who intend to engage in study and research in Oxford and are prepared to participate in the academic life of the College. Visiting Fellows are expected to be resident in Oxford during the tenure of the Fellowship. A Visiting Fellow may be elected for a period of one, two, or three terms within the Oxford academic year.

Normally the College aims to accommodate nine Visiting Fellows in each term. As a result of planned building works this year there will probably be fewer vacancies in Michaelmas Term 2011 and correspondingly more in Hilary and Trinity Terms 2012.

Eligibility:

Most Visiting Fellows are holders of university posts, but the College welcomes applications from others who wish to carry out scholarly work in Oxford, including work that engages with public life (e.g. in Law, public policy, or the Arts). Visiting Fellowships are not normally offered to candidates who before the end of their tenure of the fellowship would have reached the retirement age in force for academic fellows of the College (presently 67). There is no limitation upon the field of study. It is not the College’s policy to offer Visiting Fellowships to persons holding posts in Oxford or who are already resident in or near Oxford.

Selection Procedures:

The College has to choose every year from among a large number of well-qualified applicants, in widely varied fields of study. In making this choice, we give weight to intellectual quality, to the interest and feasibility of the research project, and to the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford. We therefore ask applicants to include with their application form a full statement, of not more than 1000 words, of the scholarly project they would pursue during their tenure of a Visiting Fellowship, and of the benefit of carrying it out in Oxford.

Applications must be submitted by 3 September 2010. The online application system will remind referees to submit references, but the College relies upon applicants to ensure that references are submitted by 10 September 2010 at the latest, and cannot itself undertake to approach referees.

The International Max Planck Research School “Elementary Particle Physics – Theoretical, Experimental and Cosmological Frontiers” (IMPRS EPP) is a joint initiative of the Max Planck Institute of Physics (Werner Heisenberg Institute) and the particle and astroparticle physics groups of the Ludwig Maximilian University Munich and the Technical University Munich. Since April 2005 the School has been offering excellent research opportunities to highly qualified doctoral students. Research fields covered by the School from both an experimental and a theoretical perspective include high energy particle physics, astroparticle physics, and cosmology. The physics of strong interactions, quantum chromodynamics, symmetries and mechanisms for symmetry breaking, neutrino physics and neutrino astrophysics, supersymmetry, string theory, physics and technology of particle detectors and light sensors, dark matter, gamma-ray astrophysics, cosmic rays, and weak interaction physics are just a few examples of the range of topics under investigation. The students’ own research is supplemented by an accompanying lecture program. Regular seminars, workshops, and other joint events serve to broaden the intellectual horizon, stimulate interaction between IMPRS members, and provide valuable background knowledge on topics beyond the students’ own research project.

DAAD - Re-invitation Programme for Former Scholarship Holders

The Re-invitation Programme helps the DAAD maintain contacts with its former one-year scholarship holders and with former scholarship holders who had studied in East Germany (GDR) for at least one year. Former scholarship holders meeting these requirements can apply for re-invitation to Germany to complete a research or work project at a state higher education institution or non-university research institute.

Duration

Depending on the applicant's work schedule, the research stay can last between one and three months.

Value

Depending on the applicant's academic status, the monthly award will amount to 1840 euros for assistant lecturers, assistant professors and young lecturers, and 1990 euros for professors, in exceptions, 2240 euros. The DAAD will not cover any international travel costs for applicants from Singapore.

Requirements

Applications for the re-invitation programme can only be submitted by former one-year scholarship holders who have been back in their home country for at least three years.

The most important selection criterion is a convincing and well-planned research or work project to be completed during the stay in Germany. The content and schedule must have been coordinated and agreed with an academic supervisor or research collaboration partner at the German host institution in question. Written confirmation of the planned cooperation project, including express reference to the applicant's project, must be included with the application.

The application must include proof of a workplace being provided at the host institute.

DAAD support for a research or work stay can only be awarded once in any three-year period.

Asia New Zealand Foundation Travel Grants for New Zealand Citizens

The Asia New Zealand Foundation (Asia:NZ) Travel Grants to Japan are open to students studying at undergraduate level at a New Zealand tertiary institution who have been accepted on an exchange programme to Japan. These grants are a contribution towards travel costs to Japan.

The objectives of the Asia:NZ Travel Grants to Japan are to:

- Encourage students to participate in an international exchange to Japan
- Provide assistance to students to meet basic travel costs
- Increase the number of New Zealand students studying in Japan
- Increase international linkages between New Zealand and Japan
- Contribute to the academic programme of students by helping them gain short-term access to some of the best academic and educational institutions in Japan

Eligible Candidates

To be eligible for an Asia:NZ Travel Grant to Japan, students must meet the following criteria:

1. Be a NZ citizen or permanent resident
2. Be enrolled in a undergraduate degree programme at a NZ tertiary institution
3. Be aged between 18 and 25
4. Be accepted by their home institution and their destination institution for participation in an exchange to Japan
5. Have completed at least one semester of full-time study at the time of application
6. Have a good academic record
7. Have a demonstrated interest in learning or developing their Japanese language skills and increasing their understanding of Japanese culture

Value

The value of the travel grant is $1,500. Up to five grants are available per year.

Terms and Conditions

Applicants must be enrolled in an undergraduate qualification both at the time of application and throughout the period of study abroad.

Students who return home or abandon their study abroad may be required to repay the Asia:NZ Travel Grant to Japan.

Applicants must be participating in a formal exchange programme for which there is a signed, formal student exchange agreement between the destination and home institutions.

Recipients must begin their study abroad in the term or semester for which the award was made (no extended holidays or working holidays prior to beginning study).
Students who have been awarded an Asia:NZ Travel Grant to Japan in a previous r
ound and have then deferred their exchange, will need to reapply to be reconsidered in the next round. Students are only eligible to receive the award once and will not be considered if they are accepted for a second exchange period. Grant recipients are allowed to hold other scholarships in addition to the Asia:NZ Travel Grant to Japan.

Recipients are expected to return to their home institutions for at least one semester after the period of exchange or study abroad finishes, unless the study abroad leads to the completion of their qualification.

Recipients are required to prepare a report for Asia:NZ at the completion of their exchange, on the outcomes and benefits of their experience in Japan, as well as an article in a format suitable for publication on the Asia:NZ website.

Why men justify a break in school admission policies

It is difficult to imagine that the controversy over higher education, such as obtaining their freshman classes - the number of visitors "black boxes", which too often seem to prefer someone else baby - could not get warmer. But they are.

Top the list of complaints "legacy" recordings - the students an extra edge because of the father or grandfather, he concluded that the College has (and more than a few dollars in the coffers of the institution).

Then ... Choose your favorite sport, at least. If you do not like the idea of universities as a training camp used for professional football, we wonder why some linebacker is replaced by a checkered academic career at the tender high school for their child less athletic. Do not think that minorities an extra edge? Adhere to the body of conservative interest groups that only the legal right case before the Supreme Court to find the right step. And do not forget the annoying habit of many universities have at least one student to allow for each state. Do not know if I wasted outraged or amused by all admission preferences for North Dakota.

A new wrinkle

We now have a new reason to be angry with the preferences of viewers. The U. S. Civil Rights Commission recently it would investigate whether women have higher standards for admission to many colleges to attract and especially small private liberal arts schools that people have trouble.

The question is not whether the admission is made bias. (E '). And if the universities should be under pressure, no. All pressures to the Commission. It has no legal powers. But it is not difficult to enormous pressure from the high school girls to learn in a higher bar admission policy.

But the universities have good reasons for a firm grip. Picking a freshman class will define what a university. Some universities do that through the evaluation of the candidates religious zeal, "his other artistic talents. There are a variety out there. If colleges think they need a program for donors and students to keep the football in a good mood, you should not judge hard. The images are for older people a reason to keep tradition alive.

The Scholarship of Administration

Ernest Boyer’s classic 1990 book, Scholarship Reconsidered, raised the academy’s consciousness concerning many types of scholarship: the scholarship of discovery, of integration, of application, and of teaching. All of these types of scholarship continue to receive our attention. But a fifth type, the scholarship of administration, using a scholarly approach in performing higher education administration, should be added to that list.

Never has the need been greater in higher education to apply our skills as scholars to the work of operating colleges and universities. Anecdotal evidence of individual institutions’ success stories may be inspirational and persuasive, but such evidence fails to provide data-informed guidance to colleges and universities trying to determine how best to use their resources to enhance student success and faculty scholarship. Turning the scholarly lens on administration and using the same careful investigation, design, assessment, and communication strategies employed in traditional research, colleges and universities can more effectively ensure that their efforts result in the greatest positive effect. Too often, and in direct contrast with how they would conduct their own research, some administrators embark on academic initiatives without first investigating what others have done, without designing their initiatives so that they can assess the results, and without broadly communicating those results. Applying basic research principles to administration can help prevent colleges and universities from pursuing unsuccessful paths.

Finding a successful path in these times of increased financial pressures and competition may not just be advantageous, but a matter of survival. As a result of the recent economic downturn, colleges and universities are being caught between decreases in all sorts of revenue and continuously rising energy, technology, and health care costs. Colleges and universities need to know which strategies will provide the most benefit to their students and faculty members given the resources expended.

For example, consider student retention -- critically important to an institution both as an indicator of that institution’s success with students, and as a source of revenue. Suppose the president of East Coast University has announced that $1 million is available for a special retention initiative. The provost is convinced that more full-time faculty are needed, the vice president for administration is convinced that the solution lies in cleaning the bathrooms and classrooms more often, and the vice president for student affairs is convinced that a new wing on the sports center is definitely the answer. Each of these administrators can tell many stories supporting their point of view, recounting students’, and their parents’, concerns and complaints. Chances are that the administrator who tells the most persuasive stories, or who has built up the most influence with the president, or whose idea is backed by a potential donor, will get the lion’s share of the $1 million.

Now consider another way of attacking this problem. Suppose a representative sample of current students and of recently departed students is chosen and then $100,000 of the $1 million is spent to assess their satisfaction concerning all major aspects of their experiences at East Coast University. Suppose further that the results reveal that by far the most common cause of student dissatisfaction and departure is the quality of teaching. The remaining $900,000 could then be spent, quite effectively, on conducting workshops for both full-time and part-time faculty to enhance their teaching (using methods previously proven successful in the research literature, of course). Simultaneously, at no cost except time, the provost could focus on working with the department chairs and deans to provide clear expectations to the faculty with regard to their teaching performance, and to provide clear and definitive consequences should expectations not be met.

Many colleges certainly have institutional research offices, and some administrators use studies from these offices to examine the track records of various programs or key trends. However, the kind of scholarship of administration that is needed goes much further -- to actually constructing experiments, complete with control groups.

For an example that requires such an approach, first note that currently in the United States, some 40 percent of traditional college students take at least one developmental course. These students, although they have graduated from high school, have been deemed not to possess the necessary reading, writing, and/or quantitative skills for college-credit courses. However, at least for students just below the cutoffs for qualifying for college-credit courses, there is no definitive evidence that taking, and even passing, developmental courses will increase the probability of these students ever graduating college. Simply being placed directly into college-credit courses along with greater support services, or some other form of support, may be just as effective. For students performing significantly below the cutoffs we have even less information. Perhaps an intensive boot-camp-type experience would be better than separate developmental courses -- we just do not know. There has been an assumption by some educators that developmental courses would be the best way to help such students, but that assumption may be wrong. Multiple studies have tried to use existing data to determine definitively whether developmental courses do or do not help students just below the cutoffs, but ultimately all such studies are imperfect because none have had a true experimental design -- none have randomly selected students into these courses or not and then compared the two groups.

Therefore many United States institutions of higher education will continue to expend huge proportions of their budgets each year on these courses that may not be the best way to help their students, and millions of students will be placed in these courses each year, taking up hundreds of hours of each student’s time, time that could be devoted to other activities such as earning money or taking credit-bearing courses, and delaying these students’ college graduations. Why are all administrators not clamoring for data to support the existence of these types of courses? It has been argued that the definitive evidence will never exist because it would not be ethical to conduct a controlled experiment on whether or not to give a student developmental courses. However, is it ethical to continue to require millions of students to take these courses when we do not even know that this is the best way to help them? What would be ethical is to conduct a controlled experiment -- one that randomly assigns students to developmental courses, other forms of assistance, or no assistance, and then assesses the results.

That it is possible to take a successful scholarly approach to administration is illustrated by a third example: the MDRC study of first-year learning communities at Kingsborough Community College of the City University of New York. In this experiment, the researchers first identified new first-year students who wished to participate in a learning community. Then the researchers randomly selected half of these students to participate in learning communities, and the rest of the students were not allowed to participate. Thus the resulting two groups of students were similar, not only in terms of their high school preparation and intended career goals, but in their motivation to be in a learning community, a possibly critical variable. As it turned out, the students who participated in the learning communities accumulated more credits and performed better on English skills assessment tests. Thus it can be concluded that, at least at Kingsborough Community College, learning communities do increase student success.

There are other cases of widespread administrative practices for which there is no evidence. For example, consider the practice at many colleges and universities of giving faculty reassigned time for research. Is it definitely the case that some reassigned time results in more scholarly productivity, and that more reassigned time results in even more scholarly productivity? Perhaps a reduction in teaching of one course has very little effect, a two-course reduction has a lot of effect, and more than two courses has no greater effect than two courses.

It would be easy, however, for someone using a scholarly approach to administration to become paralyzed and never act. Controlled, experimental research is rare in higher education, and therefore administrators cannot act only when their actions can be based on such research. Frequently, the only evidence available is correlational -- event A tends to occur when event B occurs, and as many scholars know, such a correlation does not prove that A causes B, or vice versa. Students graduate in the spring when there are many flowers, but flowers do not cause graduation. When only correlational evidence is available, administrators must use their judgment to try to interpret whether or not such a finding is evidence of a causal relationship, and thus whether they should take action based on this finding or not.

In summary, administrators need to guide their actions using the same skills that they use in conducting their research. Knowledge of what constitutes good evidence, how to get that evidence, how to use that evidence, and how to tell others about that evidence, should not get checked at the door when someone takes up residence in the chair’s, dean’s, vice president’s, or president’s office. Our institutions of higher education deserve nothing less.
